Its origins are very ancient: the first official document is an edict of 1296. The institution of the Carnival is attributed to the need of the Serenissima, to grant the population, especially the humblest social classes, a period dedicated entirely to entertainment. Citizens and visitors wore masks and costumes so as to totally conceal their identity. In this way they canceled all forms of personal belonging to social classes, sex, religion. Everyone was thus free to behave according to the costumes of the character they wore. For this the greeting was simply Good morning lady mask! The joyful and incognito participation in this collective disguise rite was, and still is, the very essence of Carnival. A carefree period of liberation from one’s daily habits. We all become part of a large masked stage, in which actors and spectators come together in a single and immense procession of figures and colors.
