About Lido Palace
The Lido Palace was opened in 1899 in Riva del Garda at a time when the Trentino region was part of the Hapsburg Empire. The idea was much more than building a hotel: it was also an ambitious landscape challenge to transform Riva into the private Kaiser Riviera. During the Belle Epoque, the Lido hosted the Archduke Francesco Ferdinando, heir to the throne of Austria, and the Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna, sister of Tsar Nicholas of Russia. After the First World War the region passed to Italy and King Vittorio Emanuele and Queen Elena stayed at the Lido Palace in 1921.
However, in the 1990s the hotel fell into decline. The redesign was completed in 2011. It is the work of the award-winning architect Alberto Cechetto, a lecturer at the IUAV, the faculty of Architecture in Venice, known for his ambitious urban projects. In 2012 Cechetto won the Ischia International Architecture Award with this work.
