Veszprém-Balaton is European Capital of Culture 2023

Veszprém

Veszprém-Balaton in Hungary, together with the region of Bakony-Balaton, is the European Capital of Culture. Get ready for a year of exciting cultural programs and events

Veszprém, one of the oldest cities in Hungary, is European Capital of Culture (ECoC) 2023.

The programs, organized by VEB 2023, planned for the whole year will be grouped by cultural fields (music, theatre, art, dance, wine and gastronomy) and clusters, which will frame the main ambitions of this region.

The 9 clusters cover different but at the same time similar topics:

  • Music/City, which summarizes the intention of the organizers to make Veszprem (already UNESCO City of Music in 2019) the city with the largest number of musicians and singers in all of Hungary
  • Region, alive which shines the spotlight on the lesser-known areas of the region, recognizing them as having a unique, vibrant and top-level cultural value.
  • Fragile Balaton to disseminate and safeguard the history and importance of the largest lake in Europe with its ecosystem and that of the surrounding area
  • Reflection to immerse yourself in the identity, essence and origins of the country.
  • Bridges aims to build bridges between the city and the region, between novelty and tradition.

However, Veszprém – Balaton 2023 does not forget the fun and discovery with three other clusters.

  • The busy world of Veszprém invests in the creativity of young people
  • Out-of-the-Ordinary on the renewal of spaces as venues for art and the connection between man and nature
  • Celebration on creating events to attract and build local and international connections.

Finally, Beyond to structure a cultural program that goes beyond this particular recognition for continuous growth.

The VEB 2023 programming and events will have art and culture as their main drivers to respond to today’s complex challenges. Among other objectives: the support of traditional activities and those that will shape the future, the awareness of the ecological challenges that Lake Balaton and its catchment area have to face, the involvement of young people to stimulate their interest in culture through shows and relevant presentations, strengthening the link between citizens, the environment and culture.

The programs will coincide with the 200th anniversary of Ferenc Kölcsey’s “Hymn”, the poem that inspires the Hungarian national anthem. Veszprém will offer a wide range of celebrations on January 22, the Hungarian Culture Day. The festivities will include theatrical premieres and performances for young people.

The awarding of the title “European Capital of Culture (ECoC)” is the most important cultural policy program of the European Union. The ECoC aims to bring European peoples closer together through culture and to initiate and strengthen long-term sustainable processes. This year, the title offers a unique opportunity to promote the region of Bakony-Balaton and Veszprém as a European creative and cultural centre.
