Meliá Hotels International
On 3 June 2011 it became the new name in the Spanish chain Sol Meliá, a world leader in the resort sector, and took 13th place in the international classification of hotel chains. It is also a leader in Spain in the resort and urban hotel segments. It was established as Mallorquine Hotels in 1956 by its current president, Gabriel Escarrer Julià. 1984 was a turning point in the history of the chain. In this year, it changed its name to Hoteles Sol and, in the wake of the merger with Hotasa, became the leading Spanish hotel chain. In 1996 the colossus split into two separate companies: Inmotel, which holds the real estate, and Sol Meliá, which manages them. Three years later, Gabriel Escarrer Julià was replaced at the helm of the group by his sons Gabriel and Sebastian, who today are respectively president and vice-president. In 2000 the Tryp Hotels brand entered the large Meliá family; it was sold to Windham Worldwide in 2010, although it is still managed by Meliá Hotels International.
