Dubai is a record. And the numbers testify to it. Between January and December 2021 it welcomed 7.28 million international visitors, an increase of 32% on the previous year.

According to the latest data published by the Department of Economy and Tourism (DET), international visits exceeded 3.4 million visitors in the fourth quarter of 2021, reaching 74% of the total pre-pandemic tourist arrivals in the same period of 2019. . A positive trend that according to forecasts will continue throughout 2022 and beyond.

Key markets pick up momentum

Despite the impact of restrictions on international travel, Dubai continued to be the first choice as a safe tourist destination. India is the first market with 910,000 annual visitors (+ 5.3% compared to the previous year), followed by Saudi Arabia with 491,000 arrivals (+ 22.8% compared to the previous year).

Russia and the United Kingdom contributed respectively 444,000 (+ 50.3% compared to the previous year) and 420,000 travelers (+ 7.1% compared to the previous year). The Italian market is once again establishing itself in the list of the Top 20 countries that have contributed most to international arrivals.

With a total of 106,000 visitors, Italy confirms an important resumption of visits following the lifting of travel restrictions in the second half of 2021.

Western Europe accounted for 22% of total visitors in 2021. Following that, the South Asia area contributed 18% of international visits. Russia, the CIS and Eastern Europe made a total contribution of 15%.

The goals of the hotel sector
For the first time, in the fourth quarter of 2021 the hospitality sector exceeded pre-pandemic levels in all metrics, among which the figure of over 81.4% occupancy stands out compared to 80.7% in Q4 2019.

In 2021, average employment reached 67%, compared to 54% the previous year. The constant national and international investments in the sector have allowed Dubai visitors and residents to choose between a total of 755 hotel properties – between hotel and apartment hotel solutions – and 137,950 rooms at the end of 2021, compared to 711 hotels and 126,947 rooms. at the end of 2020.

Expo 2020 and new openings
The opening of Expo 2020 Dubai on 1 October 2021 marked the beginning of an incredible new era for the city’s tourism industry.

As the first major global event in attendance since the start of the pandemic, Expo 2020 Dubai continues to attract new visitors to the city, and has already recorded 11.6 million visits from global residents and travelers in four months.

Continuing the city’s commitment to always offer news to international travelers, 2021 saw the opening of new attractions, including the Ain Dubai Ferris wheel, the deepest diving pool in the world Deep Dive Dubai, the new panoramic observatory The View at The Palme the fascinating Hatta Dome Park glamping experience, just to name a few.

Global campaigns and new initiatives to stimulate growth
A key pillar of Dubai’s success has been innovative global and regional campaigns featuring celebrities, influencers and prominent personalities aimed at further highlighting the city’s unique appeal and boundless offering of experiences.

Among the most important, during 2021 the city launched the global “Dubai Presents” campaign with a series of cinematic trailers starring Hollywood actors Jessica Alba and Zac Efron.

The push to make Dubai the city of the future will largely pass through the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, aimed at expanding Dubai’s offering by focusing on improving the quality of life for the city’s residents and visitors.
